CHRISTMAS 2011

To our Dear Family and Friends,

Merry Christmas! I thought you might like an update about each one of us. Since many of you live far away, we figure this is the best way to keep you posted.

Sheldon: Sheldon continues to work from home for Allied Insurance as a commercial claims manager. Work is keeping him busy, and we often forget that he's hidden just up the stairs. He has been dedicated to doing the Crossfit workouts for a year and a half now. It is really paying off. He is feeling and looking GREAT (I can say that, being his wife)! I enjoy hearing about the intense workouts he does each day (and he even convinces me to do them sometimes)! As a hobby, Sheldon still enjoys photography. He takes so many beautiful photos! I feel blessed to have so many cherished moments captured to share with others. At church Sheldon also plays guitar on the worship team. And most importantly, he's the best dad and husband ever!

Jamie: I am busier than ever trying to keep up with the 3 kids and keeping the home in working order. I am homeschooling and am thankful to be using my teaching degree to educate our kids. Despite busyness, I still enjoy searching for healthy recipes to cook for the family. The little things I'm up to are: vegetable gardening, doing crossfit workouts (when I have time), and reading novels for pleasure. Reading fiction is a new hobby to me as in the past I have read mostly for information. I have also enjoyed helping with our church women's mentoring ministry, and the friendship that has come from it. Life is crazy, but God is GOOD!

As a couple, we host a Bible study in our home, and are thankful for our wonderful church family. We are looking forward to a getaway to Bonneville Hot Springs for our 9 year anniversary this month!

Braden just turned 8. He is learning so much! In addition to all he's doing at home, he is taking an engineering class for homeschool kids through the school district once a week. We are also part of a homeschool co-op that offers classes on Friday mornings. In January he began taking piano lessons from Sheldon's mom and has really taken off! His idea of success is playing his songs fast and memorized! He learned how to play the first page of Fur Elise by sight/ear in just a couple weeks, and for some reason will only play it for a select few. His mind is busier than ever inventing machines. Candy and arcade machines with coin slots are his specialty. This year he has even started using his electrical skills to add lights to his box machines and motors to his Lego machines. It's always fun to see what he will come up with next. He loves swimming, and is looking forward to trying a new sport this upcoming winter: basketball!

Ashlyn turned 5 in October, and she is full of personality! Whatever she does, she does with ALL her might! She is quite the outdoors gal and loves critters of all kinds. She spent most of her summer looking for bugs, frogs, and snakes to capture; and loved swimming in our backyard kid pool. She also began piano lessons from Sheldon's mom in January and has learned so much. It's incredible to hear someone her age play piano so well! Ashlyn also has a very creative side and loves to draw, make crafts, and come up with her very own cardboard box and Duplo Lego inventions. She also enjoys writing/drawing in her journal and doing her math problems for our home pre-K! I am thankful that she is a very capable helper around the house. This girl does not get bored; she's quite the busy body.

Elise is 19 months and full of snuggles, kisses, and activity! It's been neat watching her interests unfold this year. She LOVES babies and playing with dolls. She is our bookworm! She can sit and look at books for a long time, all on her own. She likes to be like her siblings and sit at the piano and insist for there to be a piano book up as she plucks on the keys. Music makes her smile and dance. Soft things make her squeal with delight. Shoes make her feel cool. She spends a lot of her time dodging the pokes, hugs, and shoves from her siblings. She's gonna be one tough princess!

There's so much more I could write. We are so blessed and thank God for his goodness! Hopefully you'll take time to browse the rest of our posts from this year so we can share some of our highlight moments with you!

With Love,

Sheldon & Jamie,
Braden, Ashlyn, & Elise

A Month of Celebration

Christmas is almost here...

It's been fun celebrating our Savior's birth this month. We've enjoyed our devotions from Luke, and reading a book that explains the Christmas story in a way kids can really relate to.

We also have some fun traditions to set apart this time of year from the rest.

Our newest tradition: picking out our Christmas tree at a local u-cut tree farm:

Should we pick this one? Elise thinks so!

This one is more like it!
Watching Daddy cut down the tree!

Decorating the tree:
Gingerbread houses and cookies:

Elise is trying desperately to get the candy!

Finished product!

Elise's first year decorating gingerbread cookies! Watch video clip below!

To keep our hearts focused on Jesus during this season, I remind the children that we do all these things to celebrate the most important birthday of all!

DISNEYLAND

We were totally spontaneous and took an unexpected trip to Disneyland & California Adventure last month!

Sheldon had a week to take off before the end of the year, and we had loosely planned a trip to Idaho to sight see. However, about 3 days before we were going to leave, the weather heading east was looking snowy, and not good for traveling, plus we weren't too set on going there anyway. When Disneyland was suggested, we couldn't pass up the warm and sunshine! Sheldon's dad, who is a pilot, was able to get us a great deal on standby tickets, and with only 3 days to plan and pack we were off to Disneyland!

Oh..but you have to hear how we broke "the news" to the kids, who were excited to go to Idaho (even they had NO IDEA what they were going to do there)! Sheldon sat them down and with a very serious tone explained that there was a change of plans and that we weren't going to go to Idaho. Braden started crying! Then Sheldon announced that we were going to Disneyland instead. Braden started laughing! Such a fun surprise!

Hope you enjoy some photos and video clips of our trip!

Downtown Disney at night

Teacups...one of our first rides!

Our kids love Chip n Dale, so their treehouse was a highlight.

Check out the video clip too! The old chipmunk was purchased
at Disney World when I was a kid, and is Braden's favorite stuffed animal!

Submarine...finding Nemo. Elise thought this was cool!

Astro Blasters with Sheldon!

Disney's California Adventure!

Tower of Terror was a favorite. Thirteen story elevator drop...it was exciting!

Video clips of California Screaming Roller Coaster! Braden convinced me to go on this upside down coaster. You can see me looking nervous for the launch ahead (click on the full screen button to see it better). Braden is next to me, but he's too short, and you cannot see him. This was one of his favorite rides!

Tuckered out kiddos! Good thing for Sheldon being in shape from doing crossfit workouts!
He carried Braden and Ashlyn for miles this way once they got tired!

Such great memories! The kids still talk about it almost everyday. The weather was perfect, the lines were short, and it turned out so well I am glad that I didn't have more than 3 days to plan! Hope to go back again someday.

Thanksgiving

There's so much to be thankful for...ALL THE TIME...not just on Thanksgiving. However, it's good to have a specific time of year set aside to remind us to be thankful people. Sometimes we just get so busy or burdened or weary or ungrateful or simply forgetful!

This year we were blessed to spend Thanksgiving with both sets of parents. My parents came out from Iowa and we all joined Sheldon's parents, Grandma, Uncle Duncan and Aunt Judy, brother Byron, his wife Maria and daughter Lotti, and a few others for one big Thanksgiving celebration! Since one day wasn't enough for us, we had another family gathering with most of the the same gang along with Sheldon's sister Chandelle, her husband Michael and 4 daughters the following day.

Here's some highlight photos:
My dad thinks it would be easier to carve the turkey
with the electric fork, Richard!

Great Grandma GG and Grandma Julie admiring Elise.

Sweet Lotti (Byron and Maria's daughter)

Sheldon's brother Byron

Aunt Judy

Ashlyn couldn't resist a VERY COLD dip in the pool (43 degree water)!

Thank goodness for a hot tub to warm up.

Haircut time for Braden by Aunt Chandelle.

Elise loves Papa N!

Fun memories, fun people, lots of love! Thank you Lord!

Forever Reign

Forever Reign is one of my favorite worship songs right now. So glad that HE IS GOD, and that I can "run into His arms" and know that He will always be enough!

Check it out on you tube:

Hope it encourages you as it did me!

Braden's Light Up Claw Machine

Braden wanted to take this video specifically for Uncle Brian, his engineer uncle (who he thinks is pretty cool)!

This is just one of the MANY machines Braden has made, but this one is especially neat because he hooked up a lightbulb to batteries and a switch, so that it lights up! We've been learning about electricity in science, so it was fun to see him apply what he's learned to his inventions.

Here's the video clip of his claw machine:

Our Fall Favorites

Fall is bittersweet for me. I'm a little sad to say good bye to summer warmth, sunshine, and long days. However, the beautiful fall color, cool and crisp air, and upcoming holidays help make the transition a little easier.

I wanted to share these photos as they capture some of our "little life moments" this season...

At the Pumpkin Patch:

Jack-o-Lanterns:

Ashlyn's 5th Birthday:
Pinata with the cousins! Ashlyn had fun making her own paper mache pinata!

Halloween:

We went to our church carnival, all dressed up of course! Spider Man Braden, Ballerina Elise, and Poodle Ashlyn. We love that the kids can trade the candy they won at the carnival for prizes! As you can see, Ashlyn is thinking hard about what prizes she would like.
There's so much to be thankful for, and this Thanksgiving season reminds me to enjoy each little moment of life, as it will soon be a faded memory.
